Getting the Train from Naples to Sorrento – Info, Timetable, Fares

Considering a train journey from Naples to Sorrento? Explore our comprehensive guide for essential information, including timetables, fares, and more.

When deciding how to travel from Naples to Sorrento, it depends on your plans and who you’re traveling with. If you’re heading to cities like Venice, Florence, or Rome via high-speed trains such as Italo or Trenitalia, or taking the train from Naples to Sorrento, options like the Circumvesuviana or the faster Campania Express might be convenient and affordable. However, these trains can get crowded, uncomfortable, and lack space for large luggage — especially if you’re traveling with kids or elderly family members.

For a more comfortable and stress-free experience, we highly recommend booking Private Transportation. With door-to-door service, spacious and air-conditioned vehicles, and English-speaking drivers, a private transfer offers the most comfortable and convenient way to travel between Naples and Sorrento. It’s the ideal solution for those traveling with family, large luggage, or anyone wanting to avoid the hassle of crowded public transport..

Circumvesuviana Train

The Circumvesuviana is the local commuter train that connects Naples to Sorrento, passing through several small towns along the way. Although it’s the oldest and most affordable option, it is slow and can take around 1 hour and 15-30 minutes. The final stop is Porta Nolana in Naples.

If you’re traveling with large luggage, be prepared: the train can get crowded, there’s no space for suitcases, and seating can be limited, especially during peak hours. While it’s an affordable option, it may not be the most comfortable for longer journeys.

Trains run every 30 minutes from 5:30 AM to 10:02 PM, with one-way tickets priced at €4.90. Tickets must be purchased at the station (no online booking available), and only cash is accepted, which can be inconvenient.

Campania Express Train

The Campania Express is a faster, more tourist-friendly alternative to the Circumvesuviana for the train from Naples to Sorrento. While it offers fewer stops and a quicker journey, it still has some drawbacks. The advertised comforts like air conditioning and assigned seating are not always reliable, delays, and limited luggage space.

The Campania Express operates from mid-March to mid-October, stopping at Naples Piazza Garibaldi, Naples Porta Nolana, Ercolano Scavi, Pompeii Scavi, Castellammare di Stabia, Vico Equense, and Sorrento. A one-way ticket costs €8.00, and the journey takes about 50 minutes. Tickets should be purchased at least 20 minutes before departure, and online booking is available.

The Campania Express stops are:

  • Napoli Porta Nolana
  • Napoli Piazza Garibaldi
  • Ecolano scavi Vesuvio (Ercolano ruins)
  • Torre Annunziata
  • Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri
  • Castellamare di Stabia
  • Vico Equense
  • Sorrento

These trains run only from mid-March to mid-October.  The ticket should be bought at least 20 minutes before departure or, if you’re planning to travel by train with no doubt, buy it directly online. A one way ticket costs €15,00 per person and the journey takes about 60 minutes

“It’s my first time in Italy, should I take the train from Naples to Sorrento?

While the train from Naples to Sorrento is affordable, it can be quite crowded and uncomfortable, especially for first-time visitors, families, or travelers with luggage. The Circumvesuviana and Campania Express offer little space for bags and can become stressful, particularly during peak season when many other travelers are heading in the same direction. This can make the journey feel even more cramped and overwhelming.

As locals and travel experts, we recommend choosing Private Transportation instead. It’s the most convenient option, offering door-to-door service, air-conditioned vehicles, and English-speaking drivers. You’ll also have the flexibility to stop for sightseeing, lunch, or dinner along the way. For a relaxed and seamless experience, private transfers are the best way to travel from Naples to Sorrento and enjoy your journey from start to finish.
