Sorrento to Positano: By Bus
If you prefer to travel independently, another option is the public SITA bus from Sorrento to Positano, which departs from Piazza Giovanni Battista de Curtis, right next to the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station. While it’s a budget-friendly option, there are several downsides to consider — especially if you’re traveling in a group or with children.
The buses often get very crowded, particularly during peak tourist seasons, making it difficult to find seats together or even board at all. Delays are common, and in some cases, buses can arrive much earlier or later than scheduled, causing frustration for those on a tight itinerary. Additionally, the winding roads of the Amalfi Coast can be unnerving for some passengers, as the buses navigate sharp turns along elevated cliffside routes — not ideal for those prone to motion sickness or fear of heights.
If you are in Sorrento you can also reach Positano by sea by taking a ferry or renting a private boat transfer, depending on the comfort you want to travel with, the number of people traveling with you and the available budget. If you decide to travel by sea you will have to go to the port of Sorrento, reachable on foot from Piazza Tasso in less than five minutes.
Sorrento to Positano: By Ferry
Ferries from Sorrento to Positano operate up to 6x daily with the NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo) company.
The Lucibello company has introduced two route that connects Sorrento to Positano and the ferry leaves at 16:40am and 19:40 and takes about 40 minutes. The ticket price is around €18 per person, one way, and can be purchased online. As a resident, I recommend checking the weather conditions in advance to see if the ferries have been canceled due to bad weather or rough waves.
You can bring luggage, strollers, animals and bicycles for a small fee ranging from €2.10 to €6.30. The regional ferry service that connects Sorrento with the Amalfi Coast is active only during the summer season, from April to the end of October.
